Elementary School Students’ Developmental Needs
The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and their feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family.
Comprehensive developmental school counseling programs provide education, prevention and
intervention services, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. Early identification and intervention of children’s academic and personal/social needs is essential in removing barriers to learning and in promoting academic achievement. The knowledge, attitudes and skills that students acquire in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development during these elementary years serve as the foundation for future success.

Bulldoze Bully Club Goal to Make Bullying Extinct at Penn Wood School
Bully Box is located right inside the entrance to the library. The bully box provides a way for students to report any bully situation they may have encountered. Students fill out short form provided.
There are a couple of pro-social programs at Penn Wood to build character and prevent bullying from starting, the Bulldoze Bully Club and Penn Wood PAWS.
The Bulldoze Bully Club (BBC) meets every week for a lunch bunch in the guidance office. The group consists of a dedicated group of fifth graders, whose mission it is to heighten awareness of bullying and develop strategies to make bullying extinct at Penn Wood.
The BBC encourages students to recognize that in any school there can be bullies, victims, bystanders and allies. Their ultimate goal is to eliminate bullying, but in the meantime they work to get students to stop standing idly by and become allies to anyone being bullied— asserting themselves directly with the bully or reporting the negative behavior to me or Dr. Gacomis via the bully box.
Pawsitive Penn Wood People Earn Penn Wood Paws
A group of fifth grade girls initiated the Penn Wood PAWSitive People Earn Penn Wood Paws Program last spring. This energetic bunch has continued the program this school year to recognize Penn Wood kids who demonstrate good character around the building and on the playground and to emphasize that good character, not bullying is the way to go.
Students caught doing the right thing around school , using the Six Pillars of Character in an exemplary way,are awarded a Penn Wood Paw, which are placed in a big jar in the school office. Three lucky winners are drawn from the jar bi-weekly, their names are announced on school public address system and then are awarded prizes.
