Second Step--Skills for Social and Academic Success
Starting in the 2014-15 school year in Grades K-1, The Second Step Program was launched at Penn Wood and throughout the district's elementary schools, primarily to assist children improve their overall social skills.
With their classroom teachers leading the way, Penn Wood students in grades K–3 continue to develop their social-emotional skills—including making friends, managing emotions, and solving problems--that will set them on the path for social success and academic readiness. With the able assistance of my intern from West Chester University, Deanna Filipkowski, I presented 22 Second Step lessons to each of the classes in Grades 4-5 during the 2016-17 school year. With Grades 4 and 5 on board with Second Step, the entire school, students and teachers alike, will be utilizing this award winning pro-social skills program.
Teachers and the guidance office are presently working to set up the Home Link component of Second Step so parents can understand what their children are learning during the weekly lessons. If parents have questions about Home Link, please contact your child's teacher or the guidance office.
There has been a noticeable improvement in the area of empathy skills, emotional management (anger, frustration, anxiety and more), and problem solving with the children who have experienced the program.
